On Monday, May 13, 2024, the City Commission met to discuss the intersection project, hearing input from property and business owners.
You can find the City Commission Agenda and Minutes here, and a live recording of the meeting here.
In summary, the city needs to respond to KDOT to either accept or decline the $724,500 2023 Fall KDOT Cost Share Grant awarded in November 2023. City Manager Ron Marsh provided the Commissioners with details on additional grants applied for to help fund the project beyond the KDOT grant, minimizing costs to the City and County. You can view the City Manager's report on page 29 of the Agenda packet.
Property and business owners addressed the Commissioners during the meeting. Commissioner Witt motioned, seconded by Mayor Rein, to accept the roundabout design but to work with the engineer and KDOT to minimize residential property loss, accommodate truck traffic, and ensure pedestrian safety. The motion failed 1-4.
Following further discussion, Commissioner Kollhoff, seconded by Commissioner Witt, motioned to renegotiate with KDOT for a design that meets the funding requirements, is effective without infringing on private property, and includes safety components. The motion carried 5-0.
City staff will continue collaborating with Olsson Engineering and KDOT on a revised design, and will share more information as it becomes available.
