Paint buckets at Hazardous Waste

Hazardous Waste Collection

Alachua County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center provides residents with a safe, free and convenient way to dispose of materials that can harm people and the environment if not handled improperly. Items such as paints, batteries, cleaners, oils, pesticides and electronics contain substances that can contaminate soil, air and waterways when thrown in the trash or poured down drains.

To protect public health and natural resources, the county operates permanent collection centers and hosts mobile events throughout Alachua County and our neighboring counties in North Central Florida, expanding access to responsible disposal services and collecting more than 400 tons of materials annually. These events follow an annual cycle, launching in the fall, reaching peak availability in the spring and resetting in the summer to ensure consistent, year-round coverage.

The program accepts a wide range of materials, including household chemicals, automotive fluids and batteries, paints, pesticides, solvents, electronics, fluorescent bulbs and unused medications, which are safely incinerated. In some cases the items are reused or recyled. The public is also able to visit the Collection Center, located at the Leveda Brown Environmental Park and Transfer Station to take any unused paint for their projects.

By making disposal simple and accessible, the county supports a cleaner environment while encouraging residents to play an active role in community sustainability.
