Community Gun Violence Prevention Alliance

The Community Gun Violence Prevention Alliance is working to address gun violence in Alachua County through a collaborative, public health approach that prioritizes community input and evidence-based strategies. Formed after the Alachua County Commission and the City of Gainesville declared gun violence a public health crisis in 2024, the alliance brings together local government, Santa Fe College and a broad network of community stakeholders. Monthly meetings help coordinate prevention and intervention efforts, ensuring partners remain aligned and engaged.

In 2025, the city and county expanded their efforts with support from the Children’s Trust of Alachua County, providing funding to community-based organizations and launching youth steering committees. The county awarded grants to several local organizations to implement programs focused on reducing gun violence and addressing its root causes. These initiatives reflect the alliance’s commitment to supporting grassroots solutions and amplifying community voices.

The alliance also partnered with a consultant to conduct community surveys and develop a comprehensive gun violence prevention plan, which was approved by both the city and county commissions. Work is now underway to implement the plan in collaboration with stakeholders, including outreach to smaller municipalities and unincorporated areas. Additional efforts include the development of a public-facing website to share updates, resources and opportunities for community involvement as the initiative moves forward.
