Plans for the Government Center Renovations
See what's in store for Parks and Recreation, 911 Call Center
Growing needs for the Emergency Communications Center (ECC) prompted the planning and current activities for the renovations to the Government Center. ECC needed new 911 dispatch consoles and technology upgrades that were not able to fit into their space. The best way to address space needs was to expand into the County Attorney's office adjacent to ECC.
At the same time, the Parks and Recreation department was struggling to make their space continue to function for them. In 2013, the department had to move to make room for the School Board and Administrative offices. Parks and Rec went from 6,487 square feet to their current space of 3,499 SF, losing three activities rooms in the process. With the additional, more recent loss of the Rec Gym in Fishersville along with the strong desire to provide additional activities and programming, Parks and Recreation needed additional space that afforded better functionality. Closing in the covered dock space at the south end of the Government Center will provide Parks and Recreation with a great space from which to operate and manage programming.
The renovations were done with improvement to these two primary community services in mind.
At this point, the dock work is underway and ECC's renovation has begun. The County Attorney's office (displaced by ECC's expansion), along with Human Resources, will eventually move into the space vacated by Parks and Rec. Currently, HR shares a space with the finance department. The renovations will allow for more space all around – for the County Attorney, finance, and HR offices as well as ECC and Parks and Rec.
