SAW Animal Shelter Project in Verona

Contract Awarded, Value Engineering, & New Name

To keep project cost estimates low, a value engineering process created some changes in design for the shelter.

For details, see news post "Contract for Staunton Augusta Waynesboro Animal Shelter Awarded to Harmon Construction"

Summary

A rigorous value engineering exercise led to several strategic deductions that maintained the integrity of the project while ensuring cost-effectiveness. A few notable deductions includes the following:

  • Removal of Pod-4 Cat Adoption, combining it with cat intake.
  • Elimination of the training room and bathroom and moving the dishwashing room in the administrative building.
  • Removal of pet living rooms in the lobby of the administrative building.
  • Elimination of indoor/outdoor dog kennels and "catios" for cat adoption.

The construction contract was awarded to Harman Construction with construction starting in August 2024.
Upon moving to the Verona facility, the shelter will go by the new name, the Staunton Augusta Waynesboro Animal Shelter (SAWAS).
