Introduction to Sustainability
🌲 Protecting Nature, Preserving Our Future
As a mountain and recreation-based community, Avon has a deep connection with the environment. We recognize that the health and well-being of nature is one of our most valuable assets — and reducing Avon’s carbon footprint is a top priority.
🌍 Our Climate Commitment
The Climate Action Plan for the Eagle County Community is our roadmap to addressing local climate change. The plan sets ambitious, science-aligned goals:
🔻 Reduce carbon pollution by 50% by 2030
🔻 Reduce by 80% by 2050
These targets are in line with global efforts to prevent the most severe impacts of climate change.
✅ On December 13, 2016, the Avon Town Council unanimously adopted the Climate Action Plan — the result of a year-long collaboration among over 30 Eagle County stakeholders.
🆕 The plan was updated and readopted in 2020 to reflect new data and reinforce our commitment.
📉 2020 Update Highlights
Sets reduction targets from a 2014 baseline
Focuses on key sectors: energy use, transportation, commercial buildings, waste, and energy sources
Emphasizes climate mitigation through actionable recommendations
🤝 The plan calls on all members of our community — from local governments and businesses to nonprofits and residents — to take immediate steps toward a more sustainable future.
Together, we can make meaningful progress for Avon and generations to come. 💚
