Use Tax Voter Polling Results

The Avon Town Council will consider referring a revised ballot question about the collection of Use Tax on Construction Materials to the November 5, 2024 Coordinated Election. The Town recently contracted with Magellan Strategies to conduct voter polling about a proposed ballot question and the survey results were presented to Council on Tuesday, July 23.

Magellan Strategies issued an online bilingual 22-question survey which could be answered by SMS text message or via a link on Avon.org/Engage. The survey was live from June 17 to July 2 and was completed by a total of 259 registered voters in Avon. The goal of the survey was to measure voter support and opposition of a potential Use Tax ballot measure in Avon. The survey also tested information questions to determine movement in opinion on the ballot measure. The survey measured opinion on the Town’s approval and fiscal responsibility. Finally, the survey allowed for comments.

The survey responses show support for the Use Tax. The survey results came back statistically tied on the uniformed ballot, however, after learning more about the details of the ballot question, support increased by 17 points to 57% in support of the Use Tax on Construction Materials. Several of the people surveyed agreed with the critical shortage of affordable housing and believed the use tax will generate the necessary funds for community and workforce housing.

Why do Avon voter support a ballot measure replacing the current 4% sales tax with a 4% use tax on construction materials?
"Survey responses show support for the Use Tax. Several of the people surveyed agreed with the critical shortage of affordable housing and believed the use tax will generate the necessary funds for community and workforce housing. "
