Read this FAQ if you will be required to change your address.

When will my new address be updated in E911?
The address will be updated in E911 on the effective date.
(The effective date will be on the change of address notification you will receive in the mail.)
Will I have any problems with mail delivery?
The Post Office is sent a change of address notification from Town of Cary. The United States Postal Service will change their records to your new address by the effective date. A change of address form is not required when the address is changed per government action.
The Post Office will continue to deliver your mail sent to the old address for 12 months.
Do I need to record a new deed?
No. Your Real Estate deed is based on the property’s Legal Description on the deed, it is not based on the physical address of the property.
Do I need to update my voter registration?
No. Your voter registration card will be updated per the Change of Address notification the Board of Elections is sent from the Town. The Board of Elections will update your voter registration and mail a new card to you.
Do I need to change my address on my driver's license or DMV ID?
You may change your address on your NC Drivers License or DMV ID:
- The cost is $14.00 for a duplicate.
- You can update your driver’s license or DMV ID card at a local DMV office or online at www.ncdot.org/dmv/. You will need the Change of Address notification as proof of an address change.
- There is no cost for new ID cards for citizens 70 and older. *Citizens 70 and older will need to go to their local DMV office in person. The change of address notification will provide proof of change of address. Contact NC DMV at 919-715-7000 about address changes on driver’s license.
Do I need to update my vehicle license plate and registration?
Yes. You can update the vehicle registration address by one of the following methods:
- Go to the NC DMV office and change your address by competing the MVR-24A form.
- Go online and print the MVR-24A form, then mail the form to the NC DMV. The form is located online at https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/forms. Scroll down the list to Vehicle Registration/Change of Address & Proof of Residency and click on the form "Notice of Change of Address (MVR-24A)". The NC DMV mailing address is located on the form.
- Call NC DMV at 919-814-1779 and change your address over the telephone.
(There is no charge to change your address on your vehicle registration. Any questions about address changes on vehicle registration should be directed to NC DMV at 919-814-1779.)
Town of Cary responsibilities:
- Send change of address notification to the property owner including the old address and the new address with the effective date of the change.
- Update all Town’s databases, including Utilities, Inspections and Permits, Mapping and E911 Computer Aided Dispatch.
