Park Village Drive

(Collector) Davis Drive to Jenks Carpenter Road

Cary received citizen-initiated applications for traffic calming along Park Village Drive. This corridor connects several neighborhoods to Davis Drive to the east and Jenks Carpenter Road to the west. Staff has developed a pavement marking and signage concept that is intended to moderate vehicle speeds and better support alternate modes of travel, while still supporting the vehicle traffic and emergency access commensurate with a Collector Avenue. The design is intended to be implemented in conjunction with an upcoming year's Street Improvments program (resurfacing).

Cary has responded to traffic safety concerns from community members by evaluating Park Village Drive for traffic calming. This evaluation, presented and discussed in the Traffic Data Summary posted to the Supporting Documents section, resulted in an initial recommendation by staff for traffic calming.

As a Collector Avenue, access to Park Village Drive is limited to local street intersections and no direct residential driveway connections exist. This helps to reinforce the roadway context as a higher order facility (as compared to a local street) that supports connectivity, emergency vehicle access and helps relieve congestion on larger thoroughfares such as Davis Drive. As such, some traffic calming devices like speed humps may not be an appropriate solution to moderate vehicle speeds.

The Overall Concept Plan posted to this page was prepared by staff as a complement to the existing traffic calming devices (landscaped medians) and is intended to reduce vehicle speeds while still maintaining appropriate access. As these concepts include significant adjustments to roadway striping, the implementation of this work is planned to occur in collaboration with Cary's Street Improvments program. Park Village Drive is anticipated to be selected for resurfacing in the relatively near future so staff will be aligning the development of a corridor traffic calming concept with that effort. Schedule updates will be provided to the community and posted here as they become available.

The design for this corridor is available here for review and input from all interested citizens. The Overall Concept Plan provides a high level view of the entire length of Park Village Drive while the Detailed Striping & Signage Plan shows the work in sufficient detail for bidding and construction. Additional project updates will be posted here as they become available and all are encouraged to provide input directly using the email link below.

Cary staff are happy to meet directly with community representatives as we move through this process.
