Cary Microtransit Feasibility Study

Please scroll down to take our survey.

Background

Cary is studying ways to expand transit service in our community. The study will explore how to close gaps in these services and better connect more riders to the bus network.

The study will explore microtransit in areas that are not dense enough to support quality bus service, helping residents and visitors get around Cary while also connecting to bus routes operated by GoCary, GoRaleigh, and GoTriangle.

Microtransit is a flexible, on-demand service that allows passengers to request a ride within a specific area. Most riders use an app to schedule trips, but an option to schedule using a call center is also available. About 10 or 20 minutes after requesting a ride, a vehicle arrives.

Riders traveling in the same direction are grouped together in shared trips. Microtransit services are wheelchair-accessible.

Project Scope

The study consists of four phases. Public engagement will be conducted as part of the Service Analysis phase.

Market Analysis: This phase will identify unmet needs for transit in Cary. The Study team will evaluate demographic data, land use and travel patterns, prior studies, and existing bus routes in this phase.

Service Analysis: This phase will use the results of the Market Analysis process and results of public engagement to develop several microtransit service concepts. The performance of each concept will be simulated, allowing the Study team to understand the benefits and drawbacks of each option.

Capital and Operating Implementation Plan: In this phase, initial (capital) and ongoing (operating) cost estimates for each concept will be developed. The Study team will also create recommendations for launching the preferred alternative.

Final Report: The results of the study will be combinedwill combined into one report and made available to the public for review.

Public Engagement

An Online Public Survey to provide input on potential microtransit alternatives will be available later this spring. The survey will be available online in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Hindi. Hard copies and copies in accessible formats of the survey will be available upon request.

Study staff will also be available at In-Person Events to solicit feedback on the microtransit alternatives. Events will be added to the list below as dates are confirmed:
