Accessory Dwelling Units in Charles County
Charles County is updating its zoning regulations to expand allowances for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).
Hello! You are receiving this notification because you requested updates on the Affordable Housing Workgroup project.
Community engagement for the Affordable Housing Strategy showed strong support for increasing flexibility for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), sometimes called “granny flats.” ADUs are smaller, self-contained residential units located on the same lot as a primary single-family home.
Charles County is proposing updates to zoning regulations that would expand opportunities for ADUs beyond what current regulations allow. These changes are also required by a new state law mandating that local jurisdictions update their ADU regulations by October 1, 2026.
Learn more and review the proposal by visiting the Accessory Dwelling Unit Engage project page.
Residents are also encouraged to attend the upcoming Planning Commission Public Hearing:
Date: Monday, March 16, 2026
