Regional Accessibility Plan

We're working together to build more inclusive, barrier-free communities across the Columbia Shuswap region, creating spaces and services where everyone feels valued and supported. Join us as we explore how to enhance accessibility, foster belonging, and ensure every resident has the opportunity to thrive.

Introduction

Creating communities where every resident feels valued and included is a key priority for the Columbia Shuswap Regional District and its municipal partners.

We’re working together with the City of Salmon Arm, the District of Sicamous, the City of Revelstoke, and the Town of Golden to identify, remove, and prevent barriers that limit access to services, programs, and infrastructure.

The voices of residents, especially those with lived experiences around disability, are vital to shaping this work. Through community input, we seek to understand challenges and opportunities, ensuring that the plans we develop reflect shared priorities and make a meaningful difference across the region.

Background

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District, along with its municipal partners, is taking steps to create connected, accessible and inclusive communities that promote well-being and belonging for all residents. This work includes identifying, removing, and preventing barriers across our services, programs, and infrastructure, and treating all people in ways that allow them to maintain their dignity and independence.

A regional approach

The CSRD is partnering with its member municipalities including the City of Salmon Arm, District of Sicamous, City of Revelstoke and the Town of Golden to create a shared vision and develop plans to remove barriers across the region.

The participants are committed to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility and acknowledge the importance of the disability community's lived experience.

Accessibility committee

To meet the requirements of the legislation, a formal relationship and structure has been established with these local government partners. This includes the creation of a Regional Accessibility Advisory Committee.

Its role is to provide recommendations that inform the Accessibility Plan and help improve the livability, inclusivity, and accessibility for persons working and interacting within the region.

The Committee will work to identify barriers and good practices, review draft plans, engage with the community and help increase public awareness on issues related to accessibility and inclusion.

The Regional Accessibility Advisory Committee is proud to begin the important work of shaping a Regional Accessibility Plan to improve the quality of life for people of all abilities. From the Town of Golden to the City of Revelstoke, the District of Sicamous, the City of Salmon Arm, and all our rural Electoral Areas, this is a collective effort to ensure our communities are more inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the needs of all residents and visitors.

We are asking for your insights to help guide this process. The feedback we receive will play a pivotal role in shaping priorities, identifying barriers, and creating solutions that reflect the lived experiences within our region.

The survey will launch on June 15, 2026 and will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. Check back at that time to share your thoughts.
