The City of Abilene’s Lead Service Line Inventory (LSLI) survey initiative is going “boots to the ground”. The LSLI initiative began in March 2023, after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced changes to drinking water regulations requiring water suppliers to identify all materials used in the construction of the water system. Surveys were mailed to all property addresses with city water utilities requesting your assistance identifying the type of lines within your residence. The City of Abilene, as the water supplier, is responsible for collecting and submitting all the collected survey information to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) no later than October 16, 2024, identifying all construction materials used on both the supplier’s and the customer’s side of the water meter.

To date, the City has received 973 out of 3,099 property addresses. In February, surveys will be mailed to all property addresses for which the City does not have a returned signed survey on file. In addition to resending the survey, city employees will be knocking on doors to provide residents with the survey and offering their assistance to complete the inventory. If no one answers the door, they will leave the survey on the doorknob. The form can be submitted online using the QR code, or the paper survey can be filled out, signed, mailed, or dropped off at City Hall, 419 N. Broadway. Please contact City Hall at 785-263-2550 if you have any questions.
