Voter Approval of Proposition A
May 7th, 2022, citizens voted to approve Proposition A. This proposition established the Leisure and Entertainment District as an area where certain alcohol beverages may be sold by the drink. It also established the boundaries of the area in which this is allowed. We can that area the Leisure and Entertainment District or LED for short.
In order for a business to sell alcohol by the drink in the LED, it must first obtain a Special Use Permit from the City of Portland. Permit applications are reviewed by the Planning & Zoning Commission then reviewed and approved by the City Council. To be eligible for a permit, alcohol sales must not be the primary function of the business.
The vision of the Mayor and City Council is that this action, coupled with significant investment by the City in the district, will spur economic development and increase entertainment options for our residents and visitors.
The First Event Will Be Held at the Site of a Future Park and Public Gathering Space
The City of Portland has purchased on entire City block with the intent of developing it into a park and public gathering space that will serve as the heart of the new Leisure and Entertainment District. City staff have developed a new event series titled Families on Fifth which will bring monthly events and entertainment to this space with the goal of educating citizens about future plans and gathering public feedback.
The first Families on Fifth event will occur March 17, 2023 and will feature a St. Patrick's Day celebration and Roger Creager concert, cosponsored by Cass Real Estate. Citizens are invited to a Chamber of Commerce mixer prior to the concert where they will have an opportunity to share input on the future park and public gathering space.
