Electrifying the Barrie Transit Fleet
The City of Barrie is committed to building a more sustainable future by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the environmental impact of our transit system. With City Council’s endorsement of electric buses in June 2021, we are taking a significant step toward supporting the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Our pilot initiative to introduce battery electric buses aligns with ongoing efforts to modernize and electrify the City's fleet, ensuring a cleaner, more energy-efficient transit network. Thanks to a $1.65 million investment from Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada’s Zero Emission Transit Fund, combined with $1.7 million in City funding, Barrie is prepared to lead the way in implementing cutting-edge, zero-emission public transit. This project includes the purchase of two battery electric buses and installation of the necessary charging infrastructure. As we move forward, we invite your input to help shape this important initiative and ensure it meets the needs of our community and supports our collective commitment to sustainability.
