License Plate Readers - Public Feedback

In 2023, Nashville's City Council agreed to allow the MNPD to purchase a number of license plate readers (LPRs) in the city. LPRs are high-speed, computer-controlled camera systems that are typically mounted on street poles, streetlights, highway overpasses, or attached to police squad cars. LPRs automatically capture all license plate numbers that come into view, along with the location, date, and time.

MNPD leadership believes LPRs could be a valuable tool in ensuring Nashville is a safe and secure place to live and do business. The Department also understands that some members of the public might have concerns about the way in which these tools gather information, where the Department will place LPRs in the city's neighborhoods, and how the gathered information will be stored. In order to deploy this tool in the manner that best reflects residents' values, MNPD has put together this site to gather your input.

The survey will be open for 45 days after which time the Department will summarize and respond to resident concerns. Even after the survey is completed and updates are posted here, the portal will remain active so that the Department can share updates about its work with LPRs and respond to questions.
