New Park Property at Old Calhoun Middle School

Denton Parks and Recreation recently completed a land exchange with Denton ISD, resulting in new parkland near the Old Calhoun Middle School Complex. These two parcels of land are collectively referred to as Congress Street Park

We want to know what you'd like see in Congress Street Park!

Background
In late November 2025, the City of Denton entered into an agreement to exchange parcels of land. Denton ISD agreed to provide to the City of Denton land near the Old Calhoun Middle School campus consisting of Calhoun's old track and field on Congress Street as well as the tennis courts directly west of the campus buildings on Mounts Avenue.

In exchange, the City of Denton provided to Denton ISD acreage at South Lakes park that already housed the McMath Middle School track and field. This land exchange gave Denton ISD ownership of land in advance of renovations they intend to make to the McMath track and field. The City, in turn, received high-priority parkland in the central city.

The addition of Congress Street Park to the City's park inventory will provide parks access to over 2,700 individuals who would otherwise not have a park within a 10-minute walk of their home. Adding this park land allows Denton Parks and Recreation to make progress toward our strategic goal of having a park or greenspace within a 10-minute walk for everyone in the city.
