Lily Cantú Inclusive Playground Master Plan

The existing playground space at North Lakes Park is set to become the Lily Cantú Inclusive Playground, Denton’s first fully inclusive play space. The new design will utilize universal design principles to accommodate individuals of all abilities. Once complete, it will also be the first playground of its kind in Denton County.

Following the Denton City Council’s adoption of the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan on March 1, 2022, the City prioritized the development of a playground that serves as a regional destination for children of all abilities. The park will honor Lily Cantú, a Denton native who represented the best of our community in her selfless devotion to service and improving the lives of those she knew and loved.

Plans for the playground were guided by extensive public engagement – including focus groups – to ensure its design will serve the entire community.

Some of the planned features include:

	 - Adaptive Play Structures
	 - Nature-based activities
	 - Sensory garden experiences designed for both children and adults

While the Lily Cantú Inclusive Playground is fully funded through a combination of voter-approved bonds and a grant through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Denton Parks Foundation is seeking to fundraise for additional play elements within the park.

By prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity, the Lily Cantú All-Inclusive Playground is set to become a community landmark—offering a safe, engaging, and inspiring space for everyone.
