Tree Preservation Code Amendments

At the heart of Denton's character, natural beauty, and sustainable planning are its native trees. Over the last 24 years, the City has adopted several versions of development standards aimed at preserving and protecting trees. The newest round of updates to the Tree Code are housed here. The proposed amendments include prioritization of Heritage Trees, updated protection requirements during construction, industry best practices, improved clarity, and simplification of regulations for applicable development.

In late 2024, City Council prioritized a review of the Tree Preservation Code, and on December 9, 2024, the Development Code Review Committee (DCRC) similarly provided direction to staff regarding the prioritization of amendments to the DDC related to Tree Code.

The objectives of this project relate to industry best practices, improving clarity, and simplifiying implimentation of regulations for applicable development. Examples of sections to be amended for clarifications include Tree Protection Requirements During Construction, Minimum Preservation Requirements, and Tree Replacement.
