TOWN OF EAST GREENWICH ANNOUNCES START OF SWIFT COMMUNITY CENTER EXPANSION PROJECT
The Town of East Greenwich is pleased to announce that construction on the Swift Community Center expansion project will begin on April 15, 2025. This eagerly anticipated project will enhance the Center's capacity to serve the community with additional programming space for education, workforce development, and health monitoring services.
Made possible through a grant offered by the State of Rhode Island utilizing funds from the American Rescue Plan Act's Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund, the approximate $1.5 million expansion will add approximately 1,500 square feet to the existing facility, creating two multi-purpose classrooms, additional restroom facilities, private teleconference rooms, and improved circulation throughout the building.
Public Notice: Playground Access Restrictions
Residents should be aware that access to the south side of the adjacent playground at Academy Field will be prohibited throughout the duration of construction for safety reasons. The “tot lot” equipment and swings are scheduled to remain open during the build. The construction is expected to continue through early 2026, with an anticipated completion date in February 2026. Access to the park and playground from the adjacent parking lot will be altered during the construction period. Users will be able to access the playground and park on the north edge of the playground. (see attached diagram)
Alternative playground facilities are available at Barbara Tufts Playground, Fairfield Park Playground, Sun Valley Playground, Shovlin Park, and West Street. The Town appreciates the public's patience and understanding during this construction period.
About the Project
The Swift Community Center, originally constructed in 1907 as a gymnasium for the East Greenwich Academy, currently serves as a vital hub for the community, particularly for Senior Services. Since reopening after the pandemic, the Center has experienced steadily increasing use, serving over 800 members and hosting nearly 18,000 program participations in 2024 alone.
The expansion has been designed to complement the building's historic architecture while creating modern, flexible spaces that will support a variety of community programs. The Swift Community Center will remain open during construction, with efforts made to minimize disruptions to ongoing programs and services.
