IVR (Interactive Voice Response) payments are a method by which customers can make payments over the phone using an automated system. This technology is commonly used by businesses to allow customers to pay bills, fees, or make purchases without the need for a live agent.
Here's how IVR payments typically work:
- Call the IVR System: The customer calls a dedicated phone number provided by the business.
- Menu Navigation: An automated voice prompts the customer to navigate through a series of menu options using their phone's keypad or, in some advanced systems, voice commands. The menu options guide the customer to the payment section.
- Payment Information Input: Once in the payment section, the IVR system prompts the customer to enter payment details, such as a credit card number, expiration date, CVV code, and sometimes a billing zip code.
- Verification: The system may verify the entered details by repeating them back to the customer and asking for confirmation.
- Processing Payment: Once confirmed, the IVR system processes the payment in real-time. The customer might hear a confirmation message indicating whether the payment was successful or if there was an issue.
- Receipt: Some systems offer to send a payment receipt via email or text message, or the confirmation number might be provided verbally at the end of the call.

IVR payment systems are available 24/7/365 without needing an internet connected phone. Citizens make payments at any time of the day or night, regardless of the municipality’s office hours.
Please note: Credit card transactions and electronic check is subject to a service fee.
The fee is not forwarded to the town but collected by the town’s payment processing agent.
