Parking in East Greenwich - Is there a clear solution?

Downtown East Greenwich also known as the Hill and Harbor District or Main Street (est. 1677) is the historic seaside village in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. The area is largely located within the Downtown East Greenwich Historic District which contains over 600 historic structures, some of them dating back to the early 1700’s. The residential areas are a mix of single and multifamily homes and is the most densely populated part of Town. The commercial areas consist of retail shops, restaurants, office space, and other small businesses. Most of the commercial uses are located along Main Street, but there are several restaurants and bars located on the waterfront.

Downtown East Greenwich has experienced significant commercial growth and revitalization over the past 10 years, and additional commercial and multifamily growth is anticipated in the near future. Traditionally Main Street had more smaller retail shops and offices, but the transition to more restaurants and bars has generated far more traffic and slower parking spot turnovers.

The Town will soon be embarking in parking study in the downtown area. The study will evaluate current parking conditions and formulate ideas to improve access to parking, accomodate a balance of residential and commercial interests, add safety with pedestrian enhancements, and address difficult circulation patterns. The Town anticipates the study will be conducted in Summer 2023.

This project page will include significantly more content in the coming months as an official Request for Proposals (RFP) is finalized by the Town's professional staff and released publicly in an effort to secure a qualified bidder for this assignment. Also, associated documents and a project timeline will also be added in the coming weeks as the project begins to take a more stuctured form. Please stay engaged and connected with your community as this important initiative begins to take shape.
