Ajo Bridge Project

Ajo Bridge Project

The Pima County Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration is planning a bridge replacement project on Telera Street between Rocalla Avenue and Morondo Avenue in Ajo.

The existing bridge, built in 1953, crosses over Ajo Wash and is structurally deficient and currently closed to traffic. Its weight limit restricts certain vehicles including emergency response vehicles.

We are interested in your input on the bridge improvements between the two options below:

  1. No-Build option which would leave the existing structure in place as a pedestrian facility with minor repair work to make the existing structure safe for foot traffic.
  2. Complete bridge replacement option which would make the structure safe to withstand vehicular traffic.

Access to residences would be maintained throughout construction with either option. Because the bridge is currently closed, alternative routes are already used by residents and include Cunada Street to the west and Tonelada Street to the east. Noise levels may be temporarily elevated during construction which is estimated to take approximately 6 months.
