Defensible Space Service for South Wasco County Residents

Defensible Space Service for South Wasco County Residents

Building stronger, safer communities is a shared responsibility, and defensible space plays a vital role in protecting properties from the threat of wildfire. Defensible space refers to strategic landscaping and structural adjustments that help minimize fire risks within and around your home. This project aims to empower Wasco County residents with practical tools, step-by-step guidance, and informative resources for creating defensible space while addressing the wildland-urban interface challenges unique to our region. By working together, we can preserve the natural beauty of our area and safeguard homes and families.

Through the Community Wildfire Defense Grant, residents of South Wasco County (the communities of Tygh Valley, Wamic, Pine Hollow, Pine Grove/Juniper Flat) qualify for free risk reduction work, such as tree limbing and debris removal, following a free defensible space assessment of your property. Assessments are performed by trained assessors and mitigation work, such as tree trimming and debris clean up, is performed by seasonal crews or contractors hired through local fire departments or other partner agencies. Homeowners are encouraged to actively participate in the process from start to finish, and teams are trained and equipped to provide information and education that can help residents make informed decisions about their property.

Wasco County Soil and Water Conservation District is partnering in the Community Wildfire Defense Grant by providing administrative support and collaborative project management for defensible space and roadside fuels reduction crews. SWCD staff provide support for homeowners throughout the defensible space assessment and mitigation process, and work closely with both the County and local fire crews to ensure the best possible experience for Wasco County residents.
