Winter Storm Preparedness
Severe Weather Alert: Prepare & Stay Informed This Weekend
As severe weather conditions are expected to impact multiple states this weekend, including potential high winds, heavy rain, snow, and hazardous travel, it’s important to stay informed, take precautions, and know how to communicate effectively with your community.
What to Expect
- Heavy snow and freezing rain in northern and central regions
- Strong winds, possible power outages, and falling debris in coastal and plains states
- Flooding risk in low-lying or urban areas
- Disrupted travel including flight delays, road closures, and reduced visibility
- Create or Update Your Emergency Kit
Include essentials: water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, phone chargers, and important documents.
Don’t forget supplies for pets, infants, or older adults in your household.
- Prepare Your Home
Bring inside or secure outdoor items (patio furniture, garbage bins) that could become projectiles in high winds.
Check and clear gutters and drains to reduce flooding risk.
Know how to safely shut off water, gas, and electricity if needed.
- Plan for Power Outages
Charge all devices and power banks in advance.
Keep flashlights and extra batteries easily accessible.
Avoid using candles as a light source—opt for battery-powered lights.
- Limit Travel
Stay off roads during the storm unless absolutely necessary.
If you must drive, keep an emergency kit and blanket in your vehicle.
Avoid flooded roads—“Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
- Identify Safe Spaces
Know where to take shelter during extreme conditions (e.g., lowest interior room for tornadoes).
Locate the nearest warming or evacuation shelters if needed.
- Check on Neighbors
Especially elderly or medically vulnerable individuals who may need help preparing or accessing resources.
