Red River Pedestrian Bridge (40th Avenue South to Bluestem)
Project Overview
The City of Fargo, in partnership with the City of Moorhead, is proposing to construct a pedestrian bridge and shared-use path across the Red River. The proposed path will be 10' wide with 2' shoulders, while the bridge will be approximately 670' in length and 12' wide. Both the bridge and the path will be built above the 100-Year flood elevation.
Purpose
The purpose of the proposed project is to provide a pedestrian bridge that allows for a year-round shared use path connection across the Red River between Fargo and Moorhead.
The bridge would connect the existing trail system along 50th Avenue S in Moorhead to the existing trail system at 40th Avenue S and University Dr. in Fargo. In 2019, MetroCOG completed a Fargo-Moorhead Metro Bikeways Gap Analysis that identified a need for a bikeway connection at this location.
Funding
This project will be funded with a combination of Federal and local funds, with Fargo and Moorhead each contributing to the project cost. No Special Assessments will be used to fund this project.
Project Timeline
Project design is currently underway, with bidding tentatively scheduled for the winter of 2026/2027. Construction is currently planned to begin in the spring of 2027, with completion scheduled for the spring/summer of 2028.
