Downtown Dumpsters

About

Gainesville launched an initiative to help enhance the downtown experience and elevate the vibrancy of our community spaces. Through a partnership between the city's General Services Department and renowned local artists Ruthie and Charlie Partin, we introduced a creative approach to blending functionality with aesthetics. This project transformed city dumpsters into visually unified assets, painted sleek black and featuring the Gainesville logo as part of the broader beautification efforts downtown.

From initial budget planning in early 2025 to the recent delivery of the dumpsters, this project reflects the city’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that benefits both residents and visitors. City staff and our local artists met to collaborate on the plans and the actual painting occurred over the span of a month's time. The partnership remained dedicated to ensuring the project's success aligned with community values and the responsible use of public resources.

We purchased 32 dumpsters for the project: $34,308
Painting $5,000
Total Cost for this project was $39,308

The funds came out from the operational budget for this fiscal year.

What do you think of the final outcome? Should we expand the project's scope in the future?

"We are working to revitalize the heart of our city, using strategic design to turn essential utilities into a statement of community pride. This is something the city, the community, and downtown businesses have wanted for a while and I'm thrilled that we were able to make the project work in this year's budget."
