Royal Docks and Beckton Riverside OAPF
Project

Introduction

Find out more about what has happened so far, and what this consultation is about.

Royal Docks and Beckton Riverside OAPF

The Royal Docks and Beckton Riverside Opportunity Area is one of the largest regeneration areas in London and is in the heart of the Thames Gateway.

Who is preparing this framework:

The Mayor of London (Greater London Authority and Royal Docks Team) is working together with Transport for London (TfL) and the London Borough of Newham (LBN) on the Royal Docks and Beckton Riverside Opportunity Area Planning Framework (OAPF).

The OAPF promotes the Mayor of London’s approach to Good Growth as set out in the London Plan, which means growth that is inclusive and that benefits all Londoners. Aligned also with the recovery priorities of LB Newham, this strategic plan acknowledges the principles of Community Wealth Building as set out in the Towards a Better Newham strategy, putting health and wellbeing of residents at the heart of growth.

Following the formal consultation, the OAPF with final revisions will be adopted as London Plan Guidance (LPG) in summer 2022.

What will this framework do:

  • Help guide where new homes and jobs are provided up to 2041. This includes the infrastructure to support them, for example public transport, cycle lanes, community and health facilities.
  • Be taken into account when considering and deciding planning applications that fall within its boundary.
  • Inform future planning policy, including the review of Newham’s Local Plan

What has happened so far:

Back in 2019 when this project first started, we spent the months of June to October speaking with and listening to local people and stakeholders around the Royal Docks and Beckton Riverside. This helped us understand the complex challenges and opportunities and became the basis for the draft Vision and Principles.

To make sure that we take on board your thoughts and aspirations about the vision of the Royal Docks and Beckton Riverside, we launched another round of engagement about 'Vision and Principles' (V+P) in Autumn 2020. The results of this round form the basis of the OAPF consultation draft, ensuring that the Royal Docks and Beckton Riverside becomes: a lively, healthy place, a connected resilient place, an enabled innovative place and an empowered diverse place.

Why participate:

Since we last talked to you back in 2020, we have been working hard to put together the strategic framework to guide the future growth in the Royal Docks and Beckton Riverside. Incorporating your feedback on the Vision and Principles, the OAPF includes high – level strategies and recommendations that help shape the future of the area.

Given that strategic planning affects all of our lives, it is vital that local people sit at the heart of these plans, to ensure a balance of future development with community needs, while celebrating local heritage.

Over the coming weeks we would love to hear your thoughts on the draft OAPF .

Your input as a community is really important in making this framework reflect what you want the future of the area to be.
