The Commerce of Cannabis
About
Since cannabis establishments and sales are now legal in the State of Connecticut and approval of these facilities has been left up to individual towns, town officials have been carefully weighing the ramifications of allowing or not allowing these facilities in Guilford. The Board of Selectmen has implemented a moratorium on Cannabis Establishments in the Town of Guilford until April 30, 2023.
A survey was released during the spring to solicit residents' opinions on the different issues related to this topic. In summary, 63% of those surveyed supported retail establishments in town; 64% supported cultivation facilities and 60% supported private property growth. Top priorities included keeping cannabis away from children, minimizing impaired driveway and locating these facilities in commercial areas along major highways.
In the coming months, the town hopes to solicit more feedback from residents through this engagement platform and is looking to schedule a hybrid in-person and zoom public forum to hear more feedback before a final decision is made.
