Highway 59 Expansion

The City of Gulf Shores is moving forward with a transformative project to expand and improve Highway 59, made possible through funding from the 2019 U.S. Department of Transportation’s BUILD Grant Program. This innovative initiative is designed to create economic opportunities, improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety, and promote a more sustainable, connected community.

Phase 1: Fort Morgan Road to Cypress Bend Drive Key components of this phase include:

• Addition of a third southbound lane from Cypress Bend Drive to Fort Morgan Road (Highway 180)
• Highway 59 access management improvements
• Intersection upgrades, including new left‑turn lanes
• A new entrance and access management improvements at Publix

Construction is currently underway, with completion anticipated in Fall 2026.

This project represents a major step toward enhancing mobility, safety, and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
