Oyster Bay & Bon Secour Wetland Restoration

In 2017, the City of Gulf Shores took a major step toward protecting our coastal environment by purchasing 836 acres of critical habitat in the Bon Secour River watershed. This acquisition was made possible through funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund, which supports projects that restore and protect natural resources impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

This investment allowed the City to establish two permanent nature preserves:

  • Oyster Bay Nature Preserve
  • Emmet O. and Vina Wenzel Wetland Preserve

By creating these preserves, the land is permanently protected from future development, ensuring its ecological integrity for generations to come.

Project Purpose

The goal of this project is to protect, restore, and preserve a large area of vital natural habitat while providing opportunities for passive recreation and environmental education. Planned amenities include:

  • Nature trails
  • Kayak launches
  • Wetland boardwalks

This conservation effort will also improve water quality in the Bon Secour and Mobile Bay watersheds.

Funding & Restoration

  • $9.8 million awarded by NFWF for acquisition, conservation, and restoration
  • Additional $1.4 million for future habitat restoration activities

A five-year habitat restoration plan will:

  • Improve conditions for fish and wildlife
  • Eliminate or control invasive species
  • Maintain habitats using best management practices
  • Adaptive management strategies and ongoing monitoring will ensure long-term success

Community Benefits

Beyond conservation, the City will create passive recreational opportunities that foster appreciation for our natural resources and provide educational experiences for residents and visitors.
