Waterway East Extension

The City of Gulf Shores is investing in major transportation improvements through the Waterway East Extension Project. Designed to improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and stormwater management, this project will create a stronger connection between key corridors and prepare the community for future growth.

Project Scope
The Waterway East Extension Project includes:

  • Intersection improvements at Highway 59 and East 29th Avenue
  • Roadway, drainage, and pedestrian upgrades along East 29th Avenue
  • Construction of a roundabout at East 29th Avenue and East 2nd Street
  • Roadway, drainage, and pedestrian improvements to East 2nd Street
  • Roadway, drainage, and pedestrian improvements to Waterway East Boulevard
  • Extension of Waterway East Boulevard from the Claude Petite Mariculture Center to the proposed ALDOT free bridge

Funding
This project is made possible through significant partnerships and grant funding:

  • $21.7 million RESTORE Grant
  • $8.68 million in contingency funding provided by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR)
  • $1.2 million funding agreement with Coastal Resort Properties to support design and inspection costs
  • $13.5 million provided by general fund

Community Impact
The Waterway East Extension Project represents a critical investment in Gulf Shores’ future. By improving intersections, adding pedestrian facilities, and extending Waterway East Boulevard, the project will:

  • Reduce congestion and improve traffic flow
  • Enhance safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians
  • Provide improved drainage and stormwater management
  • Strengthen connectivity to the proposed ALDOT free bridge
