Laguna Cove NRDA Restoration Project
In 2019, the City of Gulf Shores received $4.4 million in Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) funding from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) to acquire and protect 53 acres of undeveloped property along the south shore of Little Lagoon near the west end of West Beach Boulevard. This property features 6,100 feet of shoreline, critical wetlands, and dune habitats that are now permanently safeguarded from development.
The City has completed the acquisition and is currently planning habitat restoration work and the design of limited, passive recreational access facilities.
Project Update
To address bids exceeding available funds, the City requested and was awarded an additional $2 million from ADCNR, bringing the total project budget to $6.4 million. The City anticipates re-bidding the project in winter 2025.
