Little Lagoon Restoration Project
The City of Gulf Shores has been awarded $5.9 million in RESTORE funding to lead a transformative five-year initiative in partnership with ADCNR, Auburn University, University of South Alabama, Dauphin Island Sea Lab, and Mississippi State University. This project is designed to improve water quality, enhance habitat areas, and boost ecological productivity—while delivering long-term benefits such as resilient infrastructure, expanded recreational opportunities, and increased ecotourism.
What’s Included
The project will implement seven integrated programs, including:
- Living Shorelines – Construct approximately 1,000 feet of shoreline habitat
- Hydrologic Connectivity – Improve flow within the existing canal system
- Septic-to-Sewer Conversion – Connect approximately 200 individual septic systems to municipal sewer
- Shellfish Restoration – Establish an oyster restoration program
- Marsh & Seagrass Restoration – Restore critical coastal habitats
- Hydrodynamic Modeling – Analyze and improve lagoon water movement
- Ecological Research & Monitoring – Long-term water quality monitoring by university partners
Community Engagement
The project team will collaborate with local organizations, including the Little Lagoon Preservation Society and Gulf Shores High School’s Sustainability Academy, to create volunteer opportunities, public outreach, and educational programs.
Partners & Oversight
As the sole sub-recipient of RESTORE funding, the City of Gulf Shores will manage the overall program, administer funds, and oversee all seven components. Professional services for planning, engineering, environmental permitting, and inspections will be procured as needed to ensure successful implementation.
This initiative represents a major investment in the health of Little Lagoon and the future of Gulf Shores—protecting our environment while creating opportunities for recreation and education.
