Waterway Village Pedestrian Bridge

The City of Gulf Shores is developing the Waterway Village Pedestrian Bridge to enhance walkability and strengthen connections across the Intracoastal Waterway. This new bridge will provide a safe and scenic crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, linking the north and south sides of the Waterway Village District. By encouraging outdoor activity, neighborhood access, and community engagement, the bridge will serve as both a functional improvement and a community landmark.

The project is especially important as the Highway 59 expansion will remove the existing pedestrian lanes from the W.C. Holmes Bridge. By creating a dedicated pedestrian crossing, the City is ensuring that residents and visitors continue to have safe, reliable access across the waterway.

Project Scope
The Waterway Village Pedestrian Bridge will:

  • Provide a safe, dedicated pedestrian and bicycle crossing over the Intracoastal Waterway
  • Connect neighborhoods, businesses, and public spaces on both sides of Gulf Shores
  • Enhance safety by separating pedestrian and bicycle traffic from busy roadways
  • Support economic growth by encouraging foot traffic to local businesses and events
  • Create new opportunities for recreation and community connection along the waterfront

Funding and Partnerships
Funding for the Waterway Village Pedestrian Bridge is provided in part by the BUILD Grant, along with additional support from strategic partnerships. This investment reflects the City’s commitment to infrastructure projects that improve quality of life and support long‑term growth.

  • $7.9 million in BUILD Grant Funding
  • $13.5 million from the general fund
