Safe and healthy active travel in Herefordshire

Making more space to move around our towns and city safely

As shops re-open and more people visit Hereford and the market towns, temporary measures have been introduced that give pedestrians and cyclists the space they need to maintain social distancing and travel safely. By creating designated space for cycling and redesigning some of our public areas we want to help families get about safely, cut down unnecessary traffic and work with businesses so that people want to spend time in our city and market towns.

The government’s Emergency Active Travel Fund is allocating funding in two parts to promote walking and cycling for short and local journeys.

The first part includes using temporary barriers and signage to widen footways, timed road closures and more dedicated cycle lanes and off-road cycling space and will reduce traffic in busy areas allowing more space to walk and cycle. Speed reductions to 20mph on some streets will help pedestrians and cyclists feel safer where road space is shared. The temporary nature of these measures will allow them to be reviewed and amended based on their performance.

The second part is intended for more significant measures and may be introduced as permanent measures alongside other walking and cycling improvements identified by Herefordshire Council. These will be developed and implemented between now and the end of March 2021.

Project aims
  • Make the roads in and around Hereford and the markets towns safer
  • Encourage more residents and visitors to walk and cycle for short journeys or parts of longer ones
  • Improve access to local amenities
  • Support local businesses
  • How can I get involved?

It is important that we hear from residents and visitors about the temporary measures, so that we can better understand what they mean for you and how you move around your local town. We also want to know if there are other measures you think we should adopt in the future to help make our roads safer for all users.

There are lots of ways for you to get involved and we would welcome your ideas. You can start by having your say by adding your comments and suggestions on this website, or you can email us at: herefordshirecommunications@balfourbeatty.com

    What happens next?

All of the feedback received will be considered as part of the development of future plans for travel, walking ad cycling in and around Hereford and the market towns.

Select ' Have your say ' and let us know your thoughts on the temporary walking and cycling measures in your area.
