Skate Park Maintenance Project
Keeping a Beloved Community Space Safe, Fun and Future-Ready
What’s Happening?
The Town of Hinton is completing important maintenance and restoration work for the concrete skate park located next to the Dr. Duncan Murray Recreation Centre. This project focuses on repairing existing concrete surfaces at the park to ensure it remains safe, durable, and enjoyable for years to come.
First opened over twenty (20) years ago, the skate park has become a well‑used recreation space for youth, families, and visitors. As with any concrete facility of this age, regular wear and tear has created areas that now require attention. This will be the most extensive maintenance work the skate park has received since it was built.
Why Is This Project Important?
Skate parks are more than recreation spaces—they are places where:
- Youth and young adults gather, socialize, and stay active
- Families and spectators connect and build community
- Safe, barrier‑free outdoor recreation is accessible year‑round (weather-permitting)
Over time, concrete surfaces can crack, chip, or become uneven, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. This project helps ensure the skate park continues to meet safety expectations, supports positive outdoor activity, and protects community infrastructure.
What Work Will Be Done?
Specialized contractor 5-O Solutions will lead the work.
The project includes:
- Restoration and resurfacing of the concrete skate park
- Repairs to worn or damaged areas
- Improvements that extend the lifespan of the facility
- Work focused on maintaining safe conditions for public use
This is a maintenance project—not a redesign—meaning the character and layout of the skate park will remain familiar to users while being refreshed and reinforced.
How Does This Impact the Community?
To complete essential below-surface grouting work, a temporary full closure of the skate park will be required.
- Full closure: April 29 to approximately May 4
- During this time, a subcontractor will drill small holes throughout the park and complete grout pumping.
After the initial closure, crews will continue maintenance work starting May 4 for approximately 6-8 weeks (weather permitting). During this phase of maintenance, the skate park will remain partially open. To reduce disruption, the park has been divided into two sections, with work completed one section at a time. This approach allows skaters and riders to continue using the open portion of the park while maintenance is underway.
Park users may notice:
- Temporary barriers separating open and closed areas
- Changing access as work progresses
- Construction activity during scheduled work hours
Clear signage will be in place to guide users and identify active work zones. Visitors are asked to stay within open areas and follow all posted safety notices.
Once complete, the community will benefit from a safer, smoother skating surface, reduced maintenance issues, and a skate park that continues to support active, healthy recreation for years to come.
