Wildfire Hazard Reduction Work Begins - Mary Reimer Park

Controlled Hazard Reduction Burn

To help reduce the risk of wildfire and improve public safety, the Town of Hinton Fire Rescue Department in partnership with Wildfire Management Specialists are planning a controlled burn in grassy areas within and around Mary Reimer Park. The burn is scheduled to take place on a low-hazard day when conditions are safe, and fuels are adequately cured.

The purpose of the burn is to reduce the build-up of cured grass, which poses a significant fire hazard in this area. By removing these fuels, the Town aims to lower the chance of grass fires igniting and spreading—particularly into nearby forested areas and residential neighbourhoods.

The controlled burn will target unmaintained areas of the park that are not part of the Town’s regular mowing program. Park infrastructure, such as ball diamonds, walking trails, and outbuildings, will be protected throughout the operation. Burn work is dependent on weather and resource availability.

Smoke will be visible in the area during the burn, which is expected to be completed within one day. Residents are advised to avoid the burn areas and to follow all posted signage or direction from on-site personnel.

This fire mitigation initiative supports the Town of Hinton’s commitment to reducing wildfire risks and protecting the safety of our community. The Hinton Fire Rescue’s top priority remains the protection of human life and property in the face of wildfire risk.
