In 2022, the voters passed the Transportation Benefit Program (TBP) resolution, embarking on a project to build new sidewalks and multiuse paths in high need areas near schools and other areas around the city. One of those areas is 117th Avenue NE, near Lake Stevens High School, and is listed as TBP 4. The city is prioritizing pedestrians safety, by launching a pilot project to turn 117th/116th Avenue NE into a one way couplet, with one lane of the existing road temporarily turned into a pedestrian/bicycle path for one month. This will create a safe walking path for pedestrians, and help reduce vehicle speeds. You, the public will have your input heard during public open houses, with your involvement and consent for the final product.
Please reach out to the project manager prior to the public open house, to voice your feedback. Other road improvements will be performed, regardless of the pilot results, with new ADA curb ramps and a pavement overlay.

There is no existing pedestrian infrastructure on 116th or 117th Avenue NE, and many requests to calm traffic. The TBP was passed to help pedestrians, and to put sidewalks on 117th and other locations. But not 116th, which would lack sidewalks for many more years. To be conscious of your tax dollars and time, the city is innovating with other methods to build a transportation network for pedestrians, and build more walkable streets faster. As this is a novel experiment, your involvement and feedback will be crucial to make this project attentive to your needs, and will lay the groundwork for future methods to build pedestrian first infrastructure faster and more cost efficient.
