36th ST NE and Catherine Creek Bridge Replacement Project

Join the City of Lake Stevens in shaping the future of our community as we address a critical infrastructure need and restore the health of Catherine Creek—this transformative project will enhance transportation, improve fish habitat, and safeguard natural resources for generations to come.

Introduction

The existing 36th Street NE bridge over Catherine Creek has served our community for decades, but its aging timber supports have unfortunately reached the end of their lifecycle. With one lane now permanently closed and the structure no longer meeting current state water-crossing standards, this bridge poses challenges for travel and the surrounding stream health.

Its constriction of Catherine Creek has impacted natural flow patterns, hindering fish habitat and stream vitality. This project aims to replace the outdated structure with a modern design that restores two-way travel and introduces a sidewalk for pedestrian access, while aligning with Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife water-crossing standards. A reimagined bridge will also return Catherine Creek to a more sustainable alignment, improving fish habitat, reducing erosion, and advancing stormwater management. We invite community members to share perspectives as this effort moves forward, ensuring the final design reflects both environmental stewardship and the needs of Lake Stevens residents.

"The 36th St NE Bridge Replacement Project will replace a timber bridge over Catherine Creek that has reached the end of its lifespan. The new bridge will better align with Catherine Creek and allow the stream to fully utilize its floodplain, making it more sustainable for future flows, channel migration, and habitat improvements. The replacement bridge will also include a large sidepath to provide improved access across the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists."
