8th Street SE and 79th Avenue SE Corridor Safety Improvements

Project Information Project Contact
The city worked with a traffic engineering consultant to prepare a traffic safety analysis, conceptual design alternatives, and plans for roadway safety-related improvements along the corridor.

The project area spans three intersections (see below image):

- 79th Avenue SE and 10th Street SE
- 79th Avenue SE and 8th Street SE
- 83rd Avenue SE and 8th Street SE

For each segment, the consultant prepared recommendations for potential roadway/roadside safety (current phase), non-motorized accessibility (future phase), and traffic calming improvements (current and potential future phase).

Phase I of this project targets vehicle speed reduction and driver awareness by channelization and signage updates throughout the corridor, including spot-specific lane narrowing and realignments, rumble strips approaching the intersections, and updated signage. These improvements will be installed by Summer 2024. The city will repeat the traffic data collection in Fall 2024 to compare it to the baseline data. The results and analysis will refine scoping for future improvements along this corridor.
