Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Commonly asked questions about what we are trying to achieve and why.

Leeds Residential Streets

Title

Why are we monitoring traffic levels in residential areas of Leeds?

Motor traffic has increased significantly in the last 10 years and with more congestion on the main roads and Sat Nav technology, drivers are making short-cuts on residential streets.

How is access to streets restricted?

A specially designed filter or feature is placed on the street, which prevents vehicles driving the full length of the street as well as speeding and making short-cuts. Anyone walking, cycling or wheeling is still able to travel along the whole street.

Will I still be able to access my home by car?

Every street will be still be accessible by cars, as well as the emergency services, delivery vehicles and refuse trucks.

Will the emergency services be able to access my street?

Yes. We consult with all emergency services and refuse as a priority.

Will some of my car journeys take longer?

Some residents’ journeys will be less direct and may take a few minutes longer but it’s a careful balance between that and the health and safety of a neighbourhood.

What do these street filters look like, and can we input into their design?

Yes. There are a range of options to choose between some areas in other parts of the country have installed a parklet (essentially a mini park), planting and trees, a bike hangar, bollards or junction narrowing; but most importantly you have a say in this.

How do I find out about other plans for transport in Leeds?

Leeds City Council declared a climate emergency in March 2019 with the ambition to become a net-zero carbon city by 2030. This scheme is one of a series of initiatives the Council is introducing to help achieve this target. For more information visit: https://bit.ly/LeedsTS.
