6. Minerals & Waste

How should we plan for the extraction of minerals and plan for the needs for waste processing?

Leeds Local Plan

Minerals and Waste

What is this topic about?

Minerals:

To build the development that we need we must ensure that there is a steady supply of sand, gravel and crushed rock for the construction industry. Coal and shale gas also are mineral resources, and the Plan will need to set policies for how they are used.

We want to hear from you about how we should be planning for minerals, including the amount of minerals that are needed, how they are processed and moved, and the approach to coal and fracking.

Waste:

Around 2.2m tonnes of waste are produced in Leeds every year. This needs to be managed to protect public health and reduce fly-tipping. To do this we want to continue to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and improve waste management, re-use and recycling. There are a variety of existing facilities in Leeds that help to handle waste (such as the Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility at Cross Green, and a new energy from waste plant at Skelton Grange). The Plan will need to make provision for some new recycling facilities for specific types of waste, such as composting and glass.

We want to hear your views on how we should be planning for waste across Leeds.
