Find out how we're trying to improve road safety for residents in Wortley.

Reducing traffic and speeding in Wortley

We have been working closely with residents on ways to reduce rat-running and speeding in the residential areas of Wortley. Our proposals aim to stop vehicles rat-running between A58 Whitehall Road and Lower Wortley Road/Oldfield Lane, whilst exploring the addition of pedestrian crossings to help residents cross the road safely and easily.

The scheme includes:

  • a permanent road closure to motorised vehicles located at the top of Ryedale Avenue where it meets Kellett Lane and Ryedale Holt (G on map)
  • a permanent road closure to motorised vehicles located on Dragon Road where it meets Highfield Avenue and Highfield Close (H on map)

Access will still be maintained for people walking, wheeling and cycling, and residents will still be able to access their property in their vehicles (via an alternative route/s).

A traffic filter will be placed at the top of Ryedale Avenue, where it meets Kellet Lane and Ryedale Holt. This filter would permanently prohibit motor vehicles from using Ryedale Avenue and Kellet Lane as a rat-run between A58 Whitehall Road and Lower Wortley Road. The filter will still allow access for people walking, wheeling and cycling and feature benches, planting and landscaping and cycle storage.

Kellett Lane and Ryedale Holt residents will still have access to Lower Wortley Road (via Kellett Road) and Ryedale Avenue residents will still have access to A58 Whitehall Road.

Walker's Lane update

Our original proposals suggested a filter at the bottom of Walker’s Lane at its junction with A58 Whitehall Road. This was proposed to prevent traffic (often heavy vehicles) rat-running from Royds Lane across Whitehall Road and then along the residential streets of Walkers Lane and Kellett Crescent (and vice-versa).

After consulting with residents, feedback showed little desire to implement this filter and so this filter will no longer go ahead.

Pedestrian crossings

In addition, residents highlighted a need for pedestrian crossing facilities on Dixon Lane and Lower Wortley Road (see above map). However, we are still exploring these as a possibility and will update you later in the year.
