What does the project area currently look like?

St Peters Street	Eastgate Roundabout

East Street	York Street

Marsh Lane	Crown Point Road

Existing issues

Congestion in the area impacts bus journey times and bus reliability, often causing delays
The area is a popular route for pedestrians, with over 3,500 pedestrians crossing York Street daily. The current road layout makes it difficult for people walking, wheeling, and cycling to access the city centre safely
A walk from Marsh Lane to the Bus station is around 300m. To complete this journey, pedestrians have to cross the road at least 8 times
A walk from Crown Point Bridge to Leeds Playhouse is around 550m. To complete this journey, pedestrians have to cross the road at least 8 times
The east side of the city centre currently lacks quality public space and green areas, making it uninviting for people to spend time there
The cycle network is incomplete, with a link to the south missing
There is a reliance on pedestrians and cyclists sharing space

What are the benefits of improving transport options and public space in the area?

Makes walking, wheeling, and cycling safer and more enjoyable
Makes bus journeys quicker and more reliable
Easier to cross the road at busy junctions
Creates a more welcoming public space where people can spend time
Better connectivity to Leeds city centre for people walking, wheeling, cycling and getting the bus
Safer for all road users

Casualties in the area

Between 2014 and 2024 there were 260 road related casualties in the area, including 32 serious casualties and 3 fatal.

Investing in safer infrastructure improves safety for all road users and supports Vision Zero, our road safety strategy, which aims to have zero deaths and serious injuries on Leeds roads by 2040.
