Leeds City Rail Station

Progress on the scheme so far

February 2023 saw the start of work to deliver the Leeds Station Sustainable Travel Gateway scheme alongside Network Rail’s essential maintenance to the underground structure beneath New Station Street.

Delivering the two projects at the same time makes sense because it will lead to less long-term disruption and provide value for money. Both projects are complex because they are immediately outside the station’s main entrance, where safe access must be provided at all times, and the location is surrounded by a number of busy neighbouring properties including hotels and commercial premises.

Network Rail’s scheme is all the more difficult because Leeds City Station was built using a number of arches and beams crossing the River Aire.

Some of the history of the station can be read here.

As a result, much of the works are being delivered in several phases.
