Travel to Work Survey

The travel to work survey is an annual survey that helps us to identify commuting trends and helps us to inform future transport investment decisions.

The survey also helps businesses and organisations to meet travel plan obligations at individual places of work.

The 2024 survey ran between 6th March and 5th April 2024

Summary survey results

The survey received 5,073 individual responses in 2024, made up of 1,757 responses from Leeds City Council employees and 3,316 responses from employees of other business and organisations.

  • Only a third (33%) of people now drive by themselves to work in Leeds. This is the lowest level since surveys began, a 5 percentage point reduction from 38% in 2022, and a 14 percentage point reduction since the historic high of 47% in 2014.
  • Active modes of travel (walking, wheeling and cycling) continue to increase and are now returning to pre-pandemic levels at 9% of commuters.
  • The proportion of people working from home continues to decrease, at 23%, compared with 24% in 2022. This was as high as 36% at the peak of the pandemic.
  • Only a third (33%) of commuters travel to a place of work 5 days a week. More commuters travel to a workplace on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays averaging 70%, while less travel on Mondays (62%) and particularly Fridays (51%).
