Why are we doing this work?

Leeds FAS Knostrop Weir control room

Leeds FAS Knostrop weir control room

The Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme is an innovative, multi-million-pound piece of engineering that has been protecting 22,000 jobs, 500 businesses and 3,000 residential properties in Leeds from flooding since 2017.

The main element of the scheme is two state-of-the-art moveable weirs, at Crown Point and Knostrop. The mechanical weirs can be lowered to control river levels when needed during periods of heavy rain. Each of the weirs are operated via a control room at each site.

Unfortunately, the doors on each control room have been frequently targeted by graffitists. This anti-social behaviour results in an eyesore for residents, and frequent time and effort for members of our team to clean down or repaint.

What are we doing?

We have secured funding through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to commission a mural artist to create a bespoke design for the doors at the Crown Point and Knostrop control buildings.

The artwork will tastefully depict the industrial heritage of the Knostrop site, as well as the diverse wildlife that the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme supports throughout the Aire Catchment.

These murals will deter graffitists from defacing the doors and add a splash of vibrancy to a previously unremarkable space on our river front.

The completed murals will also form a part of the Leeds Street Art Trail providing the opportunity for more people to find out about the flood alleviation scheme that protects Leeds 365 days a year.

When will the mural be done?

The artwork will be designed and installed from 7/12/23.
