9. Placemaking

How do we guide and make sure that new development is designed to high standards?

Leeds Local Plan

Placemaking

What is this topic about?

Leeds has a rich and diverse urban environment, ranging from leafy suburbs, characterful villages, free-standing market towns, vibrant inner-city neighbourhoods and a thriving City Centre. The Plan will have a really important role in ensuring that new development contributes to the character of places across Leeds. It will ensure that new buildings, spaces and developments are of a high-quality design which conserves and enhances historic features, and caters for the wide range of different people living in the district. As part this, we are proposing that a ‘Design Code’ is prepared which will provide detailed design guidance for new developments.

We want to hear your views about how we should be planning high quality places, including how we achieve well-designed and sustainable places, consider the impact of development on health, respond to heritage features, support new and existing community facilities and opportunities for play, and ensure designs responds to the needs of all people, including children and those with mobility needs, and takes a ’gender inclusive’ approach.
