Barwick Road, Manston and the Poole Estate

About the project

We want to improve everyday life across the city, tackle climate change, and improve health and wellbeing. To help achieve this ambition, we’re investing in transport infrastructure to make Leeds safer for people walking, wheeling* and cycling.

This supports our transport strategy for Leeds to be “a city where you don’t need to own a car”, aiming to increase walking by 33% and cycling by 400% by 2030.

We’ve received £1.9million of government funding to better connect walking and cycling routes and make it safer and easier to walk, wheel and cycle shorter journeys to school, local shops and the centre of Crossgates.

The proposed scheme covers Barwick Road, areas of Manston, and the Poole Estate.

*Wheeling incorporates many methods for getting around, including using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walking aids and travelling with a pram or pushchair.

Collisions in the area:

Since 2019, there have been 22 casualties along the route, involving 5 serious collisions*.

Our road safety investment aims to improve safety for all road users and support Vision Zero – aiming to have zero deaths and serious injuries on Leeds roads by 2040.

*Casualties refer to the number of people hurt or killed in a collision. A collision refers to the number of incidents and can involve multiple casualties.

Previous feedback told us that it can be difficult to cross the road at busy junctions and that existing cycle routes aren’t well connected or signed. We want to address this by making it easier to cross the road, better connecting existing cycle routes, and making the area safer for all road users.

Proposals include safer and more accessible crossings, better connected cycle routes to the A64 and the centre of Crossgates, and improvements to the pedestrian environment through tree planting and wider pavements.

Objectives of the scheme:

  • To provide more opportunities for people to walk, wheel or cycle shorter journeys

  • Make it safer and more accessible for people to walk, wheel or cycle in the area

  • Make a safer and healthier place to live in and travel through

  • To improve accessibility within the local community
